The fabled Silk Road starts in the ancient Chinese city of Chang'an, today the great metropolis of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province. From here it heads west through the spectacular gorges of the Wei River and the rich yellow soil of China's vast loess region to the old garrison city of Lanzhou at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor.
