The Eastern Silk Road, from Xi’an to Kashgar

Sweet to ride forth at evening from the wells
When shadows pass gigantic on the sand
And softly through the silence beat the bells

The fabled Silk Road starts in the ancient Chinese city of Chang'an, today the great metropolis of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province. From here it heads west through the spectacular gorges of the Wei River and the rich yellow soil of China's vast loess region to the old garrison city of Lanzhou at the eastern end of the Hexi Corridor. Hemmed in to the north by the barren wastes of the Gobi Desert and to the south by the permanently snow-covered peaks of the Qilian Shan...
