China: Carving of Jinguang Shengmu, depicting her role in the 16th Century Ming Dynasty novel Fengshen Yanyi ('Investiture of the Gods'). From Ping Sien Si Temple, Pasir Panjang Laut
Jinguang Shengmu was a minor character from the classic Ming Dynasty novel 'Fengshen Yanyi'. Jinguang Shengmu, also known as Mother Golden Light, was an immortal from Golden Turtle Island and disciple of Tongian Jiaozhu, who was the founder of Branch Jie of Taoism, as opposed to Guangchengzi's Branch Chan.
It is her death at the hands of Guangchengzi, by mistake, that causes a rift and open war between the two branches that would last for many decades, leading to a final confrontation during the fall of the Shang Dynasty.
