China / Taiwan / Japan: A postcard depicting a barber and his customer sent by a Japanese colonial official in Taipei to Nara, Japan, dated 27 December 1905
Taiwan came under Japanese rule in the period between 1895 and 1945, after Qing China lost the First Sino-Japanese War to Japan and ceded Taiwan in the Treaty of Shimonoseki.
In 1945, after the defeat of the Empire of Japan in World War II, Taiwan was placed under the control of the Republic of China (ROC) with the signing of the Instrument of Surrender as a part of surrender ceremonies throughout the Asia-Pacific theater.
