Sri Lanka: A statue of the British Governor of Ceylon, Sir William Henry Gregory (1816 - 1892), stands in front of the National Museum, Colombo
The National Museum of Colombo was established on 1 January 1877, by Sir William Henry Gregory, the British Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The museum holds many important collections including the throne and crown of the Kandyan monarchs.
Since 1885, by law, a copy of every document printed in the country has to be deposited in the museum library. At present the library accommodates over 12 million titles.
