India: An engraving of the necropolis or royal tombs of the Rajahs of Jhansi, 1872
Jhansi was an independent princely state ruled by Maratha Newalkar dynasty under suzerainty of British India from 1804 till 1853, when British took over the State under terms of Doctrine of Lapse.
The fortified town of Jhansi served as its capital. The Jhansi was, however, was reclaimed and ruled by Rani Laxmi Bai (one of the leading figure Revolt of 1857) from August 1857 to June 1858.
