India / Manipur / UK: Henry Charles Keith Petty-Fitzmaurice, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne (1845 – 1927). From Vanity Fair, 4 April, 1874
On February 21, 1891 Lord Lansdowne, the British Viceroy of India, ordered J.W. Quinton, the chief commissioner of Assam, to recognise Kullachandra as the King of Manipur and to arrest Jubaraj Tikendrajit. This marked the beginning of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
The Anglo-Manipur war (1891) saw the conquest of Manipur by British Indian forces and the incorporation of the small Assamese kingdom within the British Raj.
Subsequently Manipur became a Princely State under British tutelage.
