Thailand: A detail of King Mangrai (1239 - 1311) from the Three Kings Monument in the centre of Chiang Mai, northern Thailand
The Three Kings Monument in the centre of the old city of Chiang Mai portrays Phya Mangrai, in the centre, planning the new city of Chiang Mai with his royal friends Phya Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and Phya Ngam Muang of Phayao.
King Mangrai (1239-1311) was the 25th King of Ngoen Yang (r.1261-1296) and the first King of Chiang Mai (r.1296-1311), capital of the Lanna Kingdom (1296-1558). Wat Phra Singh or to give it its full name, Wat Phra Singh Woramahaviharn, was first constructed around 1345 by King Phayu, 5th king of the Mangrai Dynasty.
