Thailand: Northern Thai women in the Umbrella Festival parade, Bo Sang Umbrella Village, Chiang Mai, northern Thailand
Bo Sang, near the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, is famous for its hand-made brightly colored umbrellas and parasols. Once a year, in late January, the Bo Sang Umbrella and San Kamphaeng Handicrafts Festival is held in the town.
Chiang Mai (meaning 'new city'), sometimes written as 'Chiengmai' or 'Chiangmai', is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand. King Mengrai founded the city of Chiang Mai in 1296, and it succeeded Chiang Rai as capital of the Lanna kingdom.
