Almost exactly twice the size of Portugal and with a similar population, Cambodia is a relatively flat, low-lying land. It is situated at the heart of Indochina and has a total area of just over 180,000sq km (69,500sq miles). It shares land borders with Thailand to the north and west, Laos to the northeast and Vietnam to the east and southeast.

Cambodia has a 443km (277 miles) coastline on the Gulf of Thailand in the southwest. The country is divided for administrative purposes into 23 provinces including Phnom Penh. The capital, Phnom Penh, is located in the southeast.
