This 14th-century illustration depicts a chess match first recorded three centuries earlier by Persian poet Abu’l-Qasim Firdawsi (Hakim Abu'l-Qasim Firdawsi Tusi), the author of the ‘Shahnameh’, the national epic of the Persian people.
